The Roundtree family came into my life when we connected on a nanny placement website over five years ago.
Maile and I met in the Starbucks in Kirkland, Washington, and chatted about her little newborn Avia and her nanny needs. I didn’t have a car at the time (seems to be a theme…trying to live a Manhattan kind of life in the pacific northwest. 🙂 ), and she said that wouldn’t work with their family’s needs or schedule. I totally understood, but I was a little disappointed as I just loved Maile’s personality, perspective, and little one.
When she emailed a few days later saying they would like to make it work in spite of the transportation issue, I was overjoyed. From then on, I spent my ‘work days’ rocking little Avia, reading to her, playing the piano for her, singing, and going on long walks with her nestled in my chest in her little Baby Bjorn.
Of course, I was photographing little Avia often, setting up ‘photo shoots’ with different outfits and settings. Second to my siblings, I think she gets the prize for being the most photographed child through my lens.
Their family, Jen (the other part-time nanny who became a dear friend in the process), and I went to Italy in 2009, and had the best of times traipsing around the countryside, the cities, sharing meals, laughs, vino, adventures…you can see a bit of it here in a little film I made after the trip…
Today, Avia turned six. Finally. She’s been mentioning how close she was for months now.
She is witty, knows exactly what she wants, and oozes love onto everyone she encounters.
Her parents hold the same qualities, and I’m grateful and honored to know them all.
I compiled this post while sitting in their beautiful lodge in Park City, Utah, as I felt so compelled to write a little public thank you of sorts….
So thank you Roundtrees. For your inspiration and friendship. And for sharing your little one with me for over five years…
