The Carriage House

Tacoma, Washington

My favorite space I’ve ever lived in, or decorated. Ever since I was little, I’ve said I wanted to turn one of those old partial subterranean garages into a cool living space. This wasn’t quite that, but it was above a garage, and it was full of character, charm, and potential. And while I didn’t do everything I intended to bring the design to the finish line, I still feel happy with where it ended up. I also had plans for all four garages below, should we ever be able to purchase them… an art studio, music studio, a secret sauna, and a guest suite. :)

Modern English?

Traditional with a twist? Worldly, but grounded?

While I read Architectural Digest from cover to cover every month, and nerd out over other interior design magazines and books, I still don’t know what to call the style I’m drawn to. But this little house, feels the closest to what I love in terms of architectural detail and style. I’m on a mission to determine what this style would be called. :)

With small appliances - a Blue Star oven, and dishwasher- the little kitchen feels a little like a children’s play kitchen and I love it. The art pieces above the window, are a collection of paintings that my friend Jen’s sons Porter and Leo painted. We provided some specific colors for them to paint with, along with a lemon tree for inspiration, and they painted custom pieces for the kitchen! They’re now some of my favorite pieces of art.
